The EYFS Framework

Our nursery & pre-school curriculum is based upon the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), a learning and development framework prescribed by the Department of Education for children aged up to 5. Also a prerequisite for Ofsted-registered childcare settings like ours, it sets out 7 key areas of focus for learning and development:

  • Communication and language*;
  • Physical development*;
  • Personal, social and emotional development*;
  • Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Understanding the world;
  • Expressive arts and design.

* These 3 prime areas of focus play a crucial part in igniting curiosity and an enthusiasm to learn. They are further strengthened by application of the remaining 4 specific areas listed. In addition to these, we also focus on the ‘whole’ child, laying foundations to improve all areas of their lives and holistic wellbeing:

In addition to the EYFS key areas, we also focus on improving all areas of their lives and holistic wellbeing.
  • Children learn about festivals, events and different cultures around the globe;
  • They learn about mindfulness & get to practise relaxation techniques;
  • They have access to Forest School resources to learn about nature;
  • Self-expression is encouraged, while ideas & imaginations are stimulated through a rich variety of activities & opportunities;
  • Children have a voice and are carefully listened to, allowing a focus on personal interests;
  • Good behaviour & mutual respect are encouraged via ‘Rainbow Rules’ & our core values;
  • Special extra-curricular activities are laid on by professionals;
  • We nurture a natural disposition towards environmental & social responsibility;
  • We introduce them to phonics & a learning strategy that ensures they are school-ready by the time they leave pre-school.

How Children Learn at Tic Toc, Ilford

At Tic Toc, babies and children learn mainly through play. Studies show this to be, by far, the best approach to the success of their learning and development during the early years. Children have the opportunity for both child-led and adult-led play experiences at the Ilford nursery.

As the term suggests, child-led activities are play experiences chosen by the children themselves. The setting offers a rich variety of play activities and resources and these free play sessions allow children to pick those that they find of particular interest. In this way, they learn at their own pace, in the most natural of ways, while at the same time improving social and language skills as they interact with peers.

Adult-led activities, meanwhile, are led by our childcare professionals. They’re carefully designed or chosen to ensure that children are playing, learning and developing in all areas of the early years curriculum. In this way, they maximise their learning potential, achieving personal bests in every area.
