Our Environment

Tic Toc Nursery in Ilford

The nursery has 3 main rooms and children have a settling-in session in the first instance. Although each room is primarily designed for a specific age group, children transition to the next classroom only when the time is right for them. This decision is a joint one made by parents and staff, including a ‘Key Person’ who is assigned to each child.

Elephants Room

– for children aged 3 months to 2 years

Suitable for about a dozen children aged from 3 months to 2 years, our ‘Elephants Room’ is set up perfectly to safely care for our youngest children. Babies are given all the love, warmth and attention they need, with a high staff-to-baby ratio of 3:1. This includes a highly experienced room leader who organises and oversees everything in this cosy room. Babies and toddlers are stimulated and entertained with an assortment of toys, games and activities that include singing, music, arts and crafts. Once their skills and abilities progress to an appropriate level around the age of 24 months, they will then move on to the ‘Giraffes Room’.

Giraffes Room

– for children aged 2 to 3 years

Suitable for about 16 or so children aged from about 2 to 3 years, the ‘Giraffes Room’ is where our developing toddlers get to further explore, experiment and learn under the watchful eye of 4 childcare professionals. Children’s skills and abilities are honed through a wide range of creative and messy activities and play opportunities along with an extensive range of resources and equipment. The Giraffes Room is divided into two parts. This first is a comfy and relaxing quiet area for imaginative play, construction, mathematical activities and a book/reading area. The second is for all the messy and creative activities, including sand and water play.

Bears Pre-School

– for children aged 3 to 5 years

The ‘Bears’ area is our pre-school, a purpose-built classroom for children aged from 3 to 5 years. The main aim of the pre-school is to prepare children for school and, as such, to also nurture a degree of independence. We have a reading scheme that allows preschoolers to get exposure to the initial stages of the Early Years curriculum, a range of free-choice activity opportunities and planned activities that include a current topic of interest. Visits are also made to places of interest, including as part of the topic work. Additional areas of focus, in readiness for school, include pencil control, an introduction to writing, simple mathematical concepts and using a computer.

Outdoor Play

Our Outdoor Environment

Our spacious outdoor area is a wonderful open-air environment where children can learn, play and be stimulated by a wide variety of outdoor activities. It’s also a great opportunity to simply enjoy the fresh air, particularly in warmer months of the year when children can spend more time outside.

The area even includes a play area specifically designated for children aged up to just 2 years of age. Older children get to enjoy and learn new skills via the vegetable patch, play house and climbing frame.

Important ‘Forest School’ resources are also included, so children can learn about the importance of nature. Playing outdoors will teach children new skills, to manage risks and to learn about the physical world.
